Who Are the Friends?

The Friends of the Scarsdale Library was formed in 1968, and in the years since has grown to encompass some 800 members. Our primary goal is to support the Library as it serves our community. We strive to focus public attention on the Library's services, facilities, and needs. Check out our Membership page to see how you can be a part of all we do for our library.

The annual Friends Book Sale, our primary fundraiser, is held in September. Check out our Book Sale page for all the details.

We also run a highly anticipated and extremely fun annual Adult and Teen Spelling Bee at the end of January. See below and Spelling Bee link for details.

Library Projects

In the past few years the Friends have extended the reach of the Library budget by contributing to a number of important and innovative projects, including:

  • Playaways
The Friends purchased 100 of these digital audio books pre-loaded on mp3 players -- a pilot program that will be greatly expanded if it proves popular.
  • Library Express
We’ve committed funds to the first library vending machine ever to be used in the Eastern United States, which is installed at the Scarsdale train station to allow access to select library materials 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Young Adult Room
We contributed to retaining an architect to re-design the Library’s young adult room.
  • Theft Detection Gates
New gates were recently purchased with Friends funds and installed at the Library’s entrance.
  • New Media Shelving
The Friends helped improve the Children’s Room with new media shelves.

Second Annual Spelling Bee

The Second Adult and Teen Spelling Bee was a tremendous success! We thank the community and all our sponsors and donors for supporting our fund-raising efforts. Click here for more information.
