ChatGPT, a form of "generative" artificial intelligence, can create large amounts of human-like language. This means ChatGPT can potentially be used for a wide variety of tasks, including writing emails, reports, plans, and so on. The rise of generative AI has sparked speculation around important economic questions: Will workers be replaced by AI systems, or made more productive by AI systems? Who will be the economic “losers” and “winners”? Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang provide evidence on these questions in their paper “Experimental Evidence on the Productivity Effects of Large Language Models.” In an online experiment, they find that ChatGPT raises workers' productivity on writing tasks and reduces differences in productivity. Shakked and Whitney will present these results and answer questions regarding their work.
