A mournful, slow-burn portrayal of a tough, diligent army sergeant undone by his homosexuality and the unforgiving machismo of military life.
Join us in the Scott Room for a screening and discussion of the 1968 military drama The Sergeant. Directed by John Flynn and written by Dennis Murphy, The Sergeant tells the story of Master Sergeant Albert Callan (Rod Steiger), a decorated war veteran posted in France in the early 1950s. Finding the depot disorganized under the command of the undisiplined Captain Loring (Frank Latimore), Sergeant Callan quickly takes charge in a tough, no-nonsense manner and restores order. But Callan finds himself discomforted by a growing attraction to one of his men, Private First Class Thomas Swanson (John Phillip Law), and falls into confusion and depression. The film builds to a tragic end with a frank, sympathetic sensibility.
Please note that The Sergeant may not be suitable for all audiences, with on-screen depictions of violence and mild sexuality.
This film is part of our celebration of Pride Month, showcasing queer stories and the LGBTQ+ actors, screenwriters, and directors, historical and contemporary, who contributed to American cinema. Light refreshments will be served during the film.
