Program Description

Event Details

A moody, intensely acted, extraordinary adaptation of Carson McCuller's gothic novel of the same name, Reflections in a Golden Eye, directed by John Huston, marks a moment in cinema history as the Hays Code was shifting to the modern MPAA rating system and provides a searing look at repressed desire - both heterosexual and homosexual.

In an unnamed fort in the American South in the late 1940s, Major Weldon Penderton (Marlon Brando) is unhappily married to his wife Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor). Penderton is a closeted gay man, prone to anger and anxious to advance his career in the Army. Encountering Private L.G. Williams (Robert Forster), who cares for the fort's horses, Penderton develops a confused attraction to the charismatic man. Williams, in turn, quickly develops a lustful infatuation with the beautiful and cruel Leonora who is herself conducting an affair with Lt. Colonel Morris Langdon (Brian Keith). The film follows the characters' obsessions, failures, and repressed desires as they build to a violent end.

Please note that Reflections in a Golden Eye is only appropriate for mature audiences, with on-screen depictions of sexuality, sadism, and intense emotional sequences.

This film is part of our celebration of Pride Month, showcasing queer stories and the LGBTQ+ actors, screenwriters, and directors, historical and contemporary, who contributed to American cinema. Light refreshments will be served during the film.
