Friends of the Scarsdale Library Spelling Bee

Scarsdale residents are buzzing with excitement for the much-anticipated return of the Spelling Bee hosted by the Friends of the Scarsdale Library.  This community event is back with a vengeance and aims to be the Friends’ primary fundraiser for 2020, supporting the Scarsdale Public Library.

Spectators of all ages will swarm to the Scarsdale High School auditorium on Friday, January 31st at 7:30pm for a night of stellar spelling and trivia, including local celebrity emcee Ed Coleman, the radio voice of the New York Mets. Teams of three people will compete in multiple rounds, winners get prizes and more! Get your teams together soon because the event fills up quickly!

Who can enter?

Any adult or high school student may enter. Each team can have up to three players. Scarsdale residency is not required.

Is there an entry fee?

Yes, registration for an adult team is $180 and for a teen team is $75.

Entry fees are payable to Friends of the Scarsdale Library, a 501(c)(3) organization. The fee is nonrefundable and is tax-deductible as a charitable contribution. A letter acknowledging the donation will be sent to the person writing the check.

 

When is the event? What if we need to change team members?

The Spelling Bee will begin at 7:30 pm. If a team member is not available on the night of the Spelling Bee due to illness or other circumstances, the team may substitute a new team member.

What if the event is canceled due to weather?

In case of inclement weather on January 31st, the snow date will be Friday, February 7th 2020.

How does the event work?

Competition will consist of two parts. In the first part, there will be four rounds of five teams each where teams will be given a word and have 20 seconds of collaboration to spell the word on a dry erase board. One team will emerge from each of those four initial rounds.

The second part will consist of just the four remaining teams, and teams will have to verbally spell the words within 30 seconds. Each team will be given its own word. There will be a series of rounds until one team remains and is declared a winner.
