What do I need to borrow library materials?

All you need is a current library card from a library in the Westchester Library System (WLS). Please bring your card each time you visit the library.

How do I get a library card?

Adults and children who live in the Village of Scarsdale are eligible for a free card that will be honored at all Westchester Public Libraries. Applications are available at the Circulation Desk. Appropriate identification is required with proof of name and street address. A card will be issued to you for immediate use.

What is my PIN and why do I need it?

Your default PIN is the last 4 digits of your phone number or the first 4 letters of your last name. If you have no phone number on your account, the default PIN is 0000. If you have forgotten your PIN, or to change your PIN go to www.westlibs.org and click on “My Account.”

How long may I keep materials?

Most items are checked out for 21 days, with some exceptions:

New books 14 days
Express paperbacks 14 days
Express audiobooks 14 days
Children’s holiday books 14 days
Speedy readers 7 days
DVD & VHS 7 days
Open-shelf magazines 7 days

Can I return materials when the library is closed?

There is a through-the-wall book slot and an audio/visual drop box in the library plaza. They are open 24/7.

May I renew an item if I want to keep it longer?

You may renew most materials one time using your library card. Any item on hold or already renewed cannot be renewed. Certain materials are not available for renewal.

How can I renew eligible materials?

You may renew online at easywls.org, by phone using the 24-hour automated phone system (914-674-4169) or by calling the library at 914-722-1302, or in person.

Is there anything I can’t borrow?

Some materials always stay in the library. Reference books, newspapers, current issues of magazines and magazines held in storage do not circulate.

Is there a limit on what I can borrow?

Children’s Room: Audiobooks (6), Playaway Views (2), Computer Games (1) and the limit on holiday books varies by holiday.

The Westchester Library System sets the following limits: One Week Express Books (3), DVDs (20), and 50 total items per card.

How can I tell if an item is checked out?

Our online catalog (easywls.org) indicates whether an item is on the shelf or checked out.

What if the item I want is checked out or the library doesn’t own it?

Holds may be placed online through the catalog (easywls.org), by phone (914-722-1302), at the Reference Desk or at the Children’s Room Desk. Regular circulating material other than speedy readers, children’s holiday books and magazines my be reserved. When the next WLS copy becomes available, you will be notified, and it will be held for you at the Circulation Desk. There is no fee for this service; however, there is a 50-cent per item fine if you fail to pick up your item.

What are my notification options?

You can be notified that your hold is available by e-mail or phone. You may also receive e-mail notifications before items are due, and when they are overdue. Please discuss your notification options with the Circulation Desk.

How do I access downloadable ebooks, magazines, audiobooks and music?

Go to www.scarsdalelibrary.org, click on “E-Library” on the vertical menu on the left, and explore your options. Many of our products have mobile apps as well. If you need help, our staff can assist you with the downloading process.

What happens if I return a book after the due date?

When we check in an overdue item, your account is charged with the fine, which you can pay at or before your next check out.

Click here for our fines schedule.

What about lost or damaged material?

You must pay the current replacement cost of each item. Library materials are expensive to replace. Please take care of everything you borrow.

The Library will deny borrowing privileges to users who accumulate overdue fines, fees, and/or replacement costs in excess of $25.00. Privileges will be reinstated when your account is clear.

What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?

Call the library immediately to report a lost or stolen card. There is a $3.00 replacement fee for a lost card.
