The Friends of the Scarsdale Library (FOSL) plays a vital role in ensuring that our local library is a dynamic and multifaceted cultural and intellectual center for all. The Friends was founded in 1946 by residents in order to work with the library board and staff in helping the library reach its “maximum usefulness” in Scarsdale, and to this day, the members of FOSL support, advocate, and fundraise to do exactly this. Most recently, the Friends was critical in the library’s successful fundraising efforts to renovate and reimagine the SPL, transforming the building into a new state of the art facility.
The Friends works in partnership with the SPL team to bring relevant and inspired content to Scarsdale by sponsoring book discussions with popular authors, underwriting art shows and purchasing the latest technology. FOSL organizes the much celebrated Village-wide Spelling Bee, stages children’s events including the annual Truck Day, subsidizes the always-in-high-demand museum passes, and fuels the program that delivers books to those who are homebound. Additionally, FOSL funds the Writers' Center at Scarsdale Public Library writing critique groups, and pays for tools that allow the Library to function organizationally at the highest levels, to name just some of the things the Friends make possible.
The outstanding professional team at the Scarsdale Public Library is constantly looking for new ways to add luster and intellectual excitement to residents’ lives, engaging them through books, media, dialogue, lectures, concerts, classes, family events and movies. By ensuring the continuity of such highly-valued offerings, and by innovating and frequently adding new ones, the Friends helps keep the Library front and center.
If you love literature, learning and fresh ideas, we hope that you will contribute to the Friends. Your generosity is essential for this public-private partnership to thrive. If you are already a Friend, please accept our gratitude for your ongoing generosity and for your continued support; if you are not yet a Friend of the Scarsdale Library, please consider becoming part of FOSL today!
