Introducing the Taste the World Club, a collaboration between the Scarsdale Public Library and Apiary at the Library.

Each month we will provide a small amount of a different spice or spice blend from a different part of the world.

Cook with the spice and join us for a Zoom discussion of what we each made.  We can share tips, recipes and opinions.

This month we will be cooking with turmeric.  Turmeric is a plant related to ginger that grows in India, Asia, and Central America.  It has a pungent, bitter flavor and a bright orange/yellow color.  It is frequently found in Indian, South East Asian, and Middle Eastern cuisines.  It can be used by grating the fresh root, or using a dried powder.  It is extremely versatile and lends a beautiful color to anything it is in.

In addition to its color and flavor, turmeric, or more specifically its active compound, Curcumin, is often used medicinally as an anti-inflammatory.  It is a powerful anti-oxidant and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a variety of ailments.

Here are several ideas for the many uses for it:

7 ways to eat and drink turmeric

37 turmeric recipes for vegetables, meats, and more

60 turmeric recipes

Be creative, and happy cooking!

We will contact you to schedule a time to pick up your kit.
