April is National Poetry Month

Women’s History Month, which occurs every year in March, celebrates the extraordinary contributions of women to American history and culture.  In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month and each year a special Presidential Proclamation is issued in honor of the national celebration.  The theme for 2021 National Women’s History Month captures the spirit of these challenging times.

February is Black History Month, an annual tribute to generations of African Americans whose invaluable contributions to this country were achieved in the face of tremendous adversity.  Originally a week-long observance created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, the event was celebrated in February to acknowledge the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.  In 1976, the celebration was expanded to a month by President Gerald R.

Did you know that the month of July was named for Julius Caesar, Roman general, scholar and politician (100 B.C. – 44 B.C)? Quintilis, which was his birth month, was renamed July by the Roman Senate to honor him after he died. Caesar’s connection to the calendar did not end there: he actually created the Julian calendar, the precursor to the Gregorian calendar currently used by much of the world today.

Today I’m going to be talking about “Storm Front,” the first book in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Butcher wrote “Storm Front” in 1996 as an exercise for a creative writing course when he was only 25. It was published by Roc/Penguin Books in 2000. Since then Butcher has written a total of 17 Dresden Files novels, including the latest, “Battle Ground,” scheduled to be released in September of this year. He has also written a number of short stories in the Dresden Files universe, published in two collections: “Side Jobs” and “Brief Cases.”

Bell Peppers, also known as sweet peppers are capsicum. This is the fruit of plants in the Grossum Cultivar group. This pepper comes in a bright variety of colors such as red,orange,yellow, and green. You can find these peppers in every supermarket, farmers market, and most backyard gardens! They can be used for a variety of side dishes and garnishing on salads and meals. They originate from Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America.

Since this summer is bound to be different- perhaps a bit quieter and closer to home- why not try something new, and be treated for your efforts? 

Berry season is in full swing around here! The blueberry is one of the most tasty (although sometimes tart) fruits native to North America. They are grown commercially throughout the U.S & Europe, but can also be found within several gardens.

Every American school child learns that the Fourth of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the birth of the United States as an independent nation.  On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, which was drafted by Thomas Jefferson.

June is Pride Month and this year marks the 50th anniversary of annual LGBTQ+ Pride traditions. The first Pride march was held in New York City on June 28th, 1970, marking the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The Library of Congress has some great information on the Stonewall Uprising if you aren’t familiar or want to refresh your memory.

Many of us have seen this over sized banana hanging out in the tropical fruit section of your supermarket and wondering what it is. It is a plantain which is bigger, firmer and has a thick skin and does not taste like a banana.

The plantain is more starchy and needs to be cooked before it can be eaten. Plantains are very popular all over the Caribbean and Central America, but that is not where plantains originated. They are indigenous to the Tropical regions of Southeast Asian.

As we seek to understand the deep injustices that have led to this current situation of unrest and calls for urgently needed change, our librarians have come together to produce a list of titles for Adults, Teens and Children that focus on anti-racism. In addition to these lists, there are a number of excellent documentaries dealing with systemic injustice on Kanopy, many of them listed here.
