Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection and to create an awareness of how our actions impact the planet. First celebrated fifty years ago in 1970 by 22 million Americans passionately committed to protecting the environment, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.
The theme for National Library Week (April 19-25, 2020,) “Find Your Place at the Library,” was chosen before the COVID-19 pandemic forced libraries to temporarily close their edifices. Sadly, most people can’t visit their libraries in person, but libraries are still very much open for business.
I’m not typically a player of video games, but we’re living in strange times. I, along with many others it seems, started playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons to connect with friends during this time of social distancing. The premise is pretty simple. You design a character and start a new life on a deserted island making choices about where to build a house, how to use the land, and which adorable anthropomorphic animals you want to live alongside you.
Last Thursday, local author and writing instructor Barbara Josselsohn spoke to us about her latest book, The Lilac House. For a quick summary of her book click here. Twenty community members, including other local authors, joined us from the comfort of their offices, couches, and writing nooks to discuss the book and her process. She also shared her thoughts on publishing on the day that many of us found ourselves asked to stay home due to Covid-19.

Poetry may not be an obvious ally in troubled times, but it can be a surprisingly reassuring source of calm and a simple tool for reducing anxiety. In that sense, poetry is perfectly suited to our current circumstances, and with that in mind, I would like to share poems I selected to uplift and inspire us.
