Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on September 18, 2020 at the age of 87. The Brooklyn born Justice, affectionately known to many of her fans as the “Notorious RBG,” was one of just nine women in a class of 500 at Harvard Law School and went on to graduate first in her class from Columbia Law School.  She was the first woman tenured professor at Columbia Law School, she founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union and, in 1993, was the second woman ever to be appointed a Supreme Court Justice.

As Summer segues into Fall our thoughts and attention turn from beach reads to weightier subjects.  September is inextricably linked to “return to school anticipation,” even for those of us decades removed from the classroom. Thoughts of academia combined with the brisker Fall weather can energize us into expanding our horizons, particularly in these atypical times when our daily routines seem to be on a loop.

Did you know that the month of July was named for Julius Caesar, Roman general, scholar and politician (100 B.C. – 44 B.C)? Quintilis, which was his birth month, was renamed July by the Roman Senate to honor him after he died. Caesar’s connection to the calendar did not end there: he actually created the Julian calendar, the precursor to the Gregorian calendar currently used by much of the world today.

Today I’m going to be talking about “Storm Front,” the first book in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Butcher wrote “Storm Front” in 1996 as an exercise for a creative writing course when he was only 25. It was published by Roc/Penguin Books in 2000. Since then Butcher has written a total of 17 Dresden Files novels, including the latest, “Battle Ground,” scheduled to be released in September of this year. He has also written a number of short stories in the Dresden Files universe, published in two collections: “Side Jobs” and “Brief Cases.”

Small flashes of light flicker in the dark summer sky. Lightning bugs are luminescent, they have the ability to create their own light in yellow, orange or green. This week we will create our own version of these winged beetles.

Bell Peppers, also known as sweet peppers are capsicum. This is the fruit of plants in the Grossum Cultivar group. This pepper comes in a bright variety of colors such as red,orange,yellow, and green. You can find these peppers in every supermarket, farmers market, and most backyard gardens! They can be used for a variety of side dishes and garnishing on salads and meals. They originate from Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America.

Last week Joanna Cole, the creator of the Magic School Bus series, passed away at the age of 75. She was the author of over 250 books for children. You can read more about her life here.

Most music these days is made available via various streaming services. Sometimes we lose sight (no pun intended) of what the artist, composer or musician looks like. Welcome to the “Dog Days,” the time of year synonymous with the “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.” The name conjures images of dappled dogs dozing in the sun but have you ever wondered where the term originated and what it actually means?  The “Dog Days,” which officially begin on July 3 and end on August 11, coincide with Sirius, the Dog Star, rising and setting with the sun. Known as the Dog Star because it is part of the constellation Canis Major, Latin for “Greater Dog,” Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky.

Hello Crafters! Today’s craft is a little different from what we have been doing. We are going to use acrylic paints so be sure to protect your table as it could get messy. Ok? Let’s go!

You will need: acrylic paint (I used green, brown, yellow, white and black), paintbrush, sponge brush, 9.5 x 11.5 clear plastic storage bag, dark blue or black paper cut to size of bag, print out of flashlight.
